The United Romani Educational Foundation, Inc.
The United Romani Educational Foundation was incorporated in 2001. Its purpose is to provide scholarships for Romanies of all ages enabling them to obtain educational qualifications at any level. It will also staff and maintain a network of cultural centers located in central and eastern Europe, North and South America and in Australia, which will serve as monitoring points for grantees, and as computer-linked resource facilities available to all members of the public. Funding will come from the disbursement of the "looted Swiss assets" which are still under negociation. UREF's permanent legal counsel are former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark (New York) and Michael Rubenstein of Locke, Liddell & Sapp (Houston), and its accountancy firm is Messrs. Margolis, Phipps & Wright PC (Houston). The board members number seventeen and include inter alia Senator Rodney Ellis and Professor Roy Mersky of the University of Texas at Austin. Chairman of the Board is The Hon. Ian F. Hancock.
